Jane's story

How My Journey Started

I moved to Northampton 4 years ago to live with a close friend, Bethel, who was an alcholic.  I became her carer and watched her slowly deteriorate until one day she passed away in front of me.  I was so upset.  I felt depressed, lonely and vulnerable.  Bethel's house was owned by the council and was in her name, whihch meant that I had to leave the accomodation.  My head was all over the place.  I didn't know what to do or where to go.

How the Hope Centre Helped Me

I didn't know what to expect from the Hope Centre but I was immediately made to feel welcome, not judged for my situration and offered a hot drink.  northampton Association for the Accomodation of the Single Homeless (NAASH) helped me to find available accomodation.  The Hope Centre has provided support, advise and most recently a work placement.  This will provide me with employability skills, structure and a reference.  It's an amzing opportunity, I'm so grateful.

If I have a problem I can go to one of the staff for advice and reassurance.

Where am I Now

I have been volunteering at the Hope Centre for three years.  I want to give something back.  I really enjoy my time and having a reason to get up.  I see myself always being involved with the Hope Centre.  I have seen people who are sleeping rough on the streets and in real need of help.  I've witnessed how the Hope Centre helps people back on their feet.  They have a programme and process and a great team of staff and volunteers all who care and want to make a diference.

I have now started a work placement in catering with Hope Enterprises.
